History of Tapaz

The Name "Tapaz" and it's Origin

The story of how Tapaz got its name is both a misunderstanding and stroke of history. It is said that during the Spanish colonization, a group of Spaniards passed away by a man who was cutting tall grass, locally known as "Talahib". In their unfamiliarity with the local dialect, the Spaniards ask, "?Como se llama pueblo?" meaning, "What is the name of this place?". The man, not understanding their question, thought they were asking what he was doing and replied, "Naga Tapaz", which means, "I am cutting Talahib". The Spaniards, misinterpreting his answer, named the "Tapaz" and thus the town was forever known by that name

The Beginnings of Tapaz as Community

The establishment of Tapaz as a settlement dates back in 1637 when it was a barrio under the Municipality of Dumalag. The visionary Don Manuel Artuz was tasked with organizing the scattered people into a cohesive community. Under his guidance, homes were built closer together, and the barrio was born. This community was first established in an area now known as Daan Banwa. However, the location proved too small, and frequent flooding from nearby Malinao River posed a risk to people's safety.

In time, the barrio of Tapaz became a full-fledge municipality, breaking free from Dumalag's administration. Don Pedro Gimeno, also known as Capitan Indio, became its first municipal captain. His leadership laid the foundations of a thriving town, establishing its first market and later, a church. Under the care of Padre Alberto Bebiera, the early Spanish influence the mingled with the traditions of the native Tapaznons, creating a unique cultural blend that would continue to define the town.

A Town Defined bu its Geography and People

The Journey Toward Modernization

In 1980, the electrification of Tapaz under the leadership of Mayor Remedios Exmundo marked a turning point. For the first time, the town had access to electricity, and with it, the people's lifestyles shifted dramatically. Nipa huts could now house televisions, and the town square-once dark and quiet-brcame a hub of activity. The lights of the plaza invited families to gather, and people from the nearby barangays could now enjoy the benefits of modernity.

World War II left its mark to Tapaz, as the public market, located at Barangay San Jose, was situated on the opposite bank of the Panay River. The abesence of a bridge made crossing a challenge, especially during the flood seasons, when the river swelled. In November 5, 1984, disaster struct when Typhoon Undang destroyed the public market, forcing the relocation of the market to Poblacion in 1985. Through the efforts of Atty. Pedro G. Exmundo, a concrete bridge was built, finally connecting the market and the town center. The bridge not only improved transportation but also brought a wave of prosperity to the local economy.
