Last May 17,2024, The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) and the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) have taken a significant step forward in the fight against illegal recruitment and human trafficking with the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA). This landmark event took place with the participation of OFW families, overseas Filipino workers (OFWs), LGU officials, and barangay representatives.

The event was graced by ASEC Francis Ron C. De Guzman of DMW and OWWA Administrator Arnaldo Ignacio. Their presence underscored the importance of this initiative and the commitment of both organizations to protecting the welfare of Filipino workers abroad.

Also in attendance were key personnel from TESDA, led by Provincial Director Rick Abraham, and representatives from DOLE Capiz, further emphasizing the collaborative effort across various government agencies.

Mayor Roberto Palomar and Vice Mayor Romel Somo, representing the Municipality of Tapaz, signed the MOA on behalf of the LGU, solidifying the local government’s dedication to this cause. The presence of DMW personnel, including OIC Regional Director Glenda Aligonza, Director Atty. Geraldine Mendez, Vanessa Mauleon, Joseph Jose, Rosemarie Tayo, Josephine Infante, and Atty. Michael Joseph Escaner, highlighted the extensive support and coordination behind this initiative.

From the OWWA Central Office, Gerwin Sundungan, Mico Mabanag, and Crisanto Malinis attended the event, along with OWWA Region 6’s Regional Director Rizza Moldes. Their participation signifies a united front in addressing the challenges faced by OFWs and their families.

This historic MOA signing marks a significant milestone in our ongoing efforts to combat illegal recruitment and human trafficking. It represents a commitment to safeguarding the rights and welfare of Filipino workers, ensuring they receive the support and protection they deserve. Through this agreement, we aim to enhance our preventive measures, provide better assistance to victims, and promote awareness among OFWs and their families about the dangers of illegal recruitment and trafficking.

By working together, we can create a safer and more secure environment for our migrant workers, fostering a community where they can thrive and succeed without fear of exploitation. This MOA signing is not just a formal agreement; it is a pledge to continue our collective fight against these heinous crimes and to uphold the dignity and rights of every Filipino worker.
